Why Does Porridge Overflow When Boiling?

Before we learn how to make porridge without overflowing, let’s understand why porridge often overflows when cooking. When the porridge boils, the temperature rises, and the water in the pot expands, creating pressure and causing the porridge to overflow. This usually happens when there is too much water or when the heat is too high. Now, let’s explore how to reduce porridge overflow when cooking.

Methods to Prevent Porridge Overflow

Method 1:

Reduce the heat. One simple way to avoid porridge overflow is to reduce the heat when cooking. Lower the heat to low or medium after the porridge has boiled. This helps lower the temperature of the pot and slows down the cooking process, ensuring better quality porridge and preventing overflow.

Method 2:

Add a little cooking oil to the porridge. Adding a small spoonful of cooking oil to the pot before boiling can also help prevent overflow. The oil will create a thin film on the surface of the porridge, preventing it from overflowing and keeping the water in the pot from rising too quickly.

Method 3:

Place a wooden chopstick or spoon on the pot rim. Another method is to place a wooden chopstick or spoon on the edge of the pot. This creates a small gap for steam and water to escape without causing overflow. Make sure they are securely placed and do not fall into the pot while cooking.

Method 4:

Cook with rice. Another method to prevent porridge overflow is to use rice to cook the porridge. Before adding the rice to the pot, boil a small amount of water, then add the rice and cook it together. The rice will quickly absorb the water and help maintain the quality of the porridge.

However, remember that each type of porridge may require a different amount of water, and the cooking methods may need to be adjusted accordingly. So, you should experiment and adjust the cooking process to suit the specific porridge you are making.
