Apple Watch review: Design

After four months of using the Apple Watch, the male half of the Macworld team has differing opinions on whether it is a great or terrible product. However, we can all agree that the Apple Watch is beautifully designed and engineered. Its chunky, rounded body is reminiscent of the original iPhone, yet it has a modern look and a satisfying feel. Additionally, it is comfortably worn on the wrist.

Unlike other fitness trackers that lack fashion appeal, the Apple Watch stands out with its sleek design. Most smartwatches in the market are designed for men, making it uncomfortable for individuals with smaller wrists.

Dimensions

Apple Watch review: Dimensions

The Apple Watch comes in two sizes: the 38mm model (measuring 38.6 x 33.3 x 10.5mm) and the 42mm model (measuring 42.0 x 35.9 x 10.5mm). Both sizes have a thickness of 10.5mm.

Build quality

The Apple Watch is available in three material options: aluminium for the Watch Sport, stainless steel for the Watch, and 18-carat gold for the Watch Edition. The Watch and Watch Edition models have sapphire screens, while the Sport version has ion-x glass.

We love the look and feel of the Apple Watch. After almost a year of use, there are no scratches on the body or screen. However, repeated use of the Sport Band straps has made them appear slightly dirty.

Apple does not recommend submerging the first-generation Apple Watch in water, although it is rated as water-resistant to the IPX7 standard. While it can withstand being water-resistant up to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes, it is splash- and water-resistant, not completely waterproof.

Though not recommended, some users have tested the watch’s water resistance without damaging it. However, it is important to note that Apple only claims the watch to be water-resistant, not waterproof.

Straps

Choosing a strap for your Apple Watch is a personal preference. There are numerous options available, such as the Link Bracelet, Sport Band, Leather Loop, and more. Different straps come in various color choices to suit individual preferences.

Screen

The Apple Watch features a high-resolution screen that varies depending on the model. The 38mm model has a resolution of 272×340 pixels, while the 42mm model offers 312×390 pixels. Both models provide a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, resulting in sharp and vivid colors.

The touchscreen is highly responsive and offers a great user experience. However, quitting apps on the Apple Watch can be counterintuitive, requiring users to press and hold the side button.

User interface

The Apple Watch’s user interface is a standout feature. Unlike many other smartwatches, the Apple Watch’s UI is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, utilizing the Digital Crown and touchscreen for navigation.

Using the Apple Watch screen allows for scrolling, tapping, and pressing harder to access more options. The Digital Crown acts as a scrolling or selecting tool, adding convenience to navigating the watch’s interface.

Performance

The Apple Watch’s performance may vary depending on factors such as running apps and Glances. While some reviewers have found the interface sluggish at times, experiences differ among users. Third-party apps can also be slow to start up, although efforts have been made to improve app speed in watchOS 2.

Using the Digital Crown

The Digital Crown serves as a solution to navigating the Apple Watch’s interface. It replaces swiping on the tiny display and brings a traditional watch feature into the modern era. Another button below the Digital Crown allows for quick access to the home screen and the Friends app.

Battery life

The Apple Watch offers approximately 18 hours of battery life with typical usage. However, battery life may vary depending on the level of activity, such as workout sessions or playing music. Charging the watch overnight is necessary, as it does not support sleep tracking.

Pricing and availability

Pricing for the Apple Watch varies depending on the model and strap chosen. Starting at £259 for the 38mm Apple Watch Sport and ranging up to £8,000 for the 18-carat gold Apple Watch Edition, there is a range of options available to fit different preferences and budgets.

Our verdict

The Apple Watch stands out with its sleek design and user-friendly interface. While it may not offer groundbreaking features, it performs well among other smartwatches on the market. With familiarity and use, the Apple Watch becomes an intuitive and slick device to enhance your daily life.
