Apple Watch Review: Design
After spending four months with the Apple Watch, the male half of the Macworld team is still debating whether it’s a great or terrible product. In our opinion, the Apple Watch is beautifully designed and engineered. It has a chunky, rounded body that is reminiscent of the original iPhone but still has a modern and satisfying feel. Additionally, it is comfortable to wear on the wrist.
Fitness trackers and smartwatches have typically been lackluster in their designs, especially for women. However, the Apple Watch stands out with its stylish appeal. Unlike other fitness trackers, the Apple Watch can pass as jewelry. It is a fashionable accessory that can comfortably fit on any wrist.
Apple Watch Review: Dimensions
The Apple Watch comes in two sizes: 38mm and 42mm. The 38mm model measures 38.6 x 33.3 x 10.5mm, while the 42mm model measures 42.0 x 35.9 x 10.5mm. Both sizes are sleek and compact.
Here’s how the 38mm Apple Watch looks on Karen’s wrist:
Apple Watch Review: Build Quality
The Apple Watch is available in three different materials: aluminium for the Watch Sport, stainless steel for the Watch, and 18-carat gold for the Watch Edition. The Watch and Watch Edition come with sapphire screens, while the Sport version has an ion-x glass.
The Apple Watch has a durable build quality. After almost a year of use, there are no scratches on the body or screen. It can withstand splashes of water, but it is not recommended for swimming or submerging in water.
Plenty of reviewers have tested its water resistance by swimming with it, and so far, no complaints of water damage have been reported. While it’s not officially waterproof, it can handle more than just a splash.
Apple Watch Review: Straps
Choosing a strap for your Apple Watch is just as important as choosing the watch itself. There are various options available, including the Link Bracelet, Sport Band, Leather Loop, Classic Buckle, Modern Buckle, Milanese Loop, Nylon band, and Hermes straps.
Among these options, the Leather Loop, Classic Buckle, Leather Loop, Modern Buckle, Woven Nylon, and Sport Band come in multiple color choices. The Milanese Loop and Link Bracelet, on the other hand, are limited to two colors. The Sport Band offers the widest variety, with 22 different colors to choose from.
Apple Watch Review: Screen
The Apple Watch has a high-resolution display. The 38mm model has a screen resolution of 272×340, while the 42mm model offers 312×390 on a slightly larger screen. Both models have a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, providing sharp and vivid colors.
The touchscreen functionality of the Apple Watch is highly responsive. It allows for easy navigation through screens with a swipe or a tap. However, quitting apps and glances can be a bit confusing and requires a specific press and hold action.
Apple Watch Review: User Interface
Apple’s user interface design expertise shines through with the Apple Watch. Unlike other smartwatches, the Apple Watch doesn’t cram too much information onto a tiny display. Instead, it utilizes the Digital Crown and touchscreen gestures for easy navigation.
Using the Watch screen, you can scroll, tap, and press harder for more options. Swiping up on the watch face brings up Glances, allowing you to quickly access relevant information.
Apple Watch Review: Performance

The Apple Watch’s overall speed and performance have received mixed reviews. Some users have found it to be sluggish, with noticeable delays when performing certain actions. However, performance can vary depending on the apps and Glances running at the time.
Third-party apps, in particular, tend to start up slowly. While watchOS 2 aimed to speed up these apps, they still don’t match the smoothness of native iPhone apps.
Apple Watch Review: Using the Digital Crown
To solve the navigation problem, Apple introduced the Digital Crown. It is a modern take on the traditional watch crown and serves as a way to scroll through icons on the Apple Watch’s screen. Below the Digital Crown is a button that takes you to the home screen and the Friends app, as well as acts as a shortcut for Apple Pay.
Apple Watch Review: Battery Life
According to Apple, the Apple Watch has a battery life of approximately 18 hours with typical use. This means that you will need to charge it every night. If you use the watch for activities such as workouts or playing music, the battery may drain faster. However, the Series 1 and 2 models boast a 50 percent faster processor, which improves the battery life compared to the original model.
Apple Watch Review: Pricing and Availability
The price of the Apple Watch varies depending on the model and strap chosen. The starting price for the 38mm Apple Watch Sport is £259, while the 42mm version starts at £299. The stainless steel Apple Watch starts at £479, and the Apple Watch Hermes starts at £1000. For the ultimate luxury, the 18-carat gold Apple Watch Edition starts at £8,000.
Our Verdict
The Apple Watch may not be the first smartwatch on the market, but it stands out with its sleek design and user interface expertise. It offers a range of features and functionalities that are on par with its competitors. Although there may be a slight learning curve, the overall experience of using the Apple Watch is enjoyable and user-friendly.
